Meet the Maker : Cynnamon of Delightful Scents

This is the first in a series I am interested in doing. My passion for handmade is something I am very proud of and it comes from really knowing the maker and seeing the passion they have for their products. They often work long, hard hours when averaged out are at or below minimum wage but they wouldn't have it any other way!

This is why I am doing this series and to kick it off, I present Cynnamon of Delightful Scents!

First, could you tell me a little about your company?

We are a Michigan based Handmade Soy Candle Company. We make soy candles and aroma melts in a variety of shapes and sizes as well as other aromatic items to delight your senses.

How did you get into candle making?

Candle making began as a hobby for my sister and I back in 2004. Once she showed me how to make candles, I was hooked, and I took the idea and ran with it. Initially I made candles for the pure enjoyment of the craft. One day I looked up and realized that candles were consuming my entire home so we took them to my Mother’s church and sold them. They were a big hit so I decided to profit from the hobby and before long my new passion became new my business.

What is your most popular product?

Aroma melts are the hottest thing right now. I think many consumers like the idea of melting the wax and getting a delightful aroma verses lighting a flame and risk the candle being knocked over by the kids or household pet potentially causing a fire.

If you had to choose one scent you could not live without what would it be?

OMG this is very hard but I would have to say Summer time! It is a delightful blend of sweet honeydew, cantaloupe, and juicy watermelon blended with icy tonic water and sweet vanilla. I absolutely love fruity smells but the blends with more than one fruit are purely delightful.

I noticed you've recently switched the look of the candles from a dyed candle to a dye free one with a hint of color at the bottom. This is something I have not seen before and I really like. What spurred this change?

I was looking for a way to transform my jar candles to be distinctively noticeable. I am a modern girl so I wanted something sleek but classy. A dye free candle with a touch of color was a great way to change our look and create a signature candle at the same time. Consumers like the dye free candles and some say they burn even better. For all our color-loving consumers, we added a touch of color to the bottom for that special effect.

Why have you chosen soy over the other available waxes?

Soy wax is made from soybeans, which are a renewable resource, grown here in the U.S.A. Soy wax is biodegradable and if burned correctly soy candles can burn 30% to 50% longer than paraffin. Soy was the first wax I used and after experimenting with others and doing research it was the one I preferred to utilize.
